The mercurial, vaporous collage of City’s Only Borders for Ascetic House is the 4th and final long form work in a cycle which also counts his Simulation Mix [Apothecary Compositions, 2015], Arcadia [Halcyon Veil, 2016] and Guts For Garters ’17 [AQNB, 2017] releases.
As with those previous instalments, Only Borders is defined by an intricacy of construction and a sense of timbral anxiety/topographic relief between its synthetic and acoustic make-up. Using field recordings lifted from YouTube as well as original iPhone recordings within his adroit sound designs, City forms a sort of mulched scrapbook of ideas flowing with a chronic momentum that carries the listener from anxiety-inducing textures to moments of steeply melancholic beauty.
City will happily admit that his music is not made for the club or even influenced by it. Rather, his music exists in the lived-in spaces between, and thusly explores a more intricate flux of emotions that come with the territory. Across the 40 minutes of Only Borders he engulfs the senses in a nervous, unsteady trip that takes in Amazon’s Alexa, blistered trance arps, eyeball-wobbling distortions and panoramic synth snapshots, adding up to a poetic vision of personal experience that broadly resonates with and evokes the modern zeitgeist in a way that will always elude academic efforts in the same arena. -- Boomkat
